Summer Reading & Book Deals 2025

The hammock is one of my favorite summer reading spots!

How’s your summer reading going? I’m usually a mood reader, meaning I don’t really plan my reading lists ahead, rather I read whatever I’m in the mood for. This summer, however, I’ve decided to make a list and see if I stick to it. No promises!

The month of July is my birthday month, so I’ve decided to celebrate by putting all my novels on sale! ONLY DARK EDGES, my modern-day Hamlet retelling is $1.99 all month long on all ebook platforms, including directly from me on the Purchase Books page. If you’ve been watching the TV show adaptation of We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, ONLY DARK EDGES will devastate you in all the same ways.

A graphic with the book cover of ONLY DARK EDGES by Katie L. Carroll with a background of a stormy sky and sea. The book cover shows a girl with auburn hair flying around her face in the wind, a stormy sky and sea behind her. Text reads, "Beware the Storm! We Were Liars meets You've Reached Sam in this modern-day Hamlet retelling. Sale $1.99"

My five other novels are 50% (that’s $2.49 each) on Smashwords for the month of July! Choose from My YA fantasies ELIXIR BOUND and ELIXIR SAVED, the YA dystopian thriller BLACK BUTTERFLY, and the middle grade books PIRATE ISLAND and WITCH TEST.

After finally having conquered the ability to read audiobooks (see “Long-Awaited Update on Training My Brain to Read Audiobooks”), I’m right on track with my reading goals for the year. I’ll be doing a bit of traveling in July, which should give me some time to conquer my summer reading. I’ll also be working on revising my first ever adult novel, a cozy dystopian that I plan on releasing this fall, so keep an eye out for more about that. If you subscribe to my newsletter, you’ve already gotten a sneak peek at the cover. Busy, busy as always over here!

I’d love to hear what’s on your summer reading list this year, so please feel free to share in the comments.

The Inspiration Behind the Award-Winning YA fantasy ELIXIR BOUND

ELIXIR BOUND is the book that made me an author, but it’s so much more than that. This book and its sequel, ELIXIR SAVED, are memorials to my sister Kylene. In ELIXIR BOUND, Katora, who has a sister named Kylene, goes on a quest to become the guardian of a secret healing Elixir. The Elixir Chronicles are like a wish in book form. A wish for more for my sister.

I’ve written about Kylene a bunch of times here on the blog (see “Still Mourning Kylene 20 Years Later”), and her too-short life continues to be a large influence on my writing. One of my works-in-progress is a picture book about a girl who loses her sister.

Mourning is a life-long process. Writing is one of the ways I try and make sense of this wonderfully complex thing we call life. Naturally, my feelings about Kylene come up a lot in my writing.

Yet, the Elixir Chronicles are fantasy quests with magic, whimsy, and adventure. There are deaths — particularly one in ELIXIR SAVED that is a bit devastating — but death and mourning aren’t main themes. The books are more about living. The characters are figuring out what kind of life they want to live and trying to put that into action.

In that way, it’s like giving Kylene — albeit a fictional one — a second chance at life. Second chances are a main theme of ELIXIR SAVED. Yup, these books are big wishes that I know won’t come true. But it still felt good to write them, even when the writing was incredibly hard at times.

The ebook of ELIXIR BOUND is currently on sale for $1.99. It’s part of the Narratess Indie Sale, which officially kicks off tomorrow. There are over 370 fantasy, sci-fi, and horror book by indie authors and publishers on sale or even free.

THE BEDTIME KNIGHT Audiobook, Book Deals, SCBWI Conferences, and Podcast News!

I wasn’t even sure how to title this post because I have so many exciting things to announce. First of all, THE BEDTIME KNIGHT is now available as an audiobook, narrated by Stephanie Quinn. And it earned an orange banner on Amazon for being the #1 new release in Audiobooks on Bedtime & Dreaming for Children! You can find the audiobook on ChirpBarnes & Noble, Kobo, Audible, Libro.fm, Scribd, Audiobooks.com, and Google Play.

If you’d like a free listen of THE BEDTIME KNIGHT, sign up for my author newsletter, where you’ll also earn access to two free short stories! It really is the best way to get all my latest news and exclusive offers, and I’ll only email you once a month. I appreciate all you who subscribe to the blog, but if you haven’t also signed up for my newsletter, I’d love for you to do that too.

For all you Kobo readers, two of my books are on sale right now. For the first time ever, ELIXIR BOUND is free now through April 9th! This award-winning YA fantasy is Shadow and Bone meets The Lord of the Rings with strong female characters embracing their power while on an epic quest. PIRATE ISLAND, the middle grade adventure reminiscent of The Goonies, is only $2.99 now through April 16th.

Now a little something for the writers! I’ll be presenting two workshops at the in-person New England SCBWI Conference, April 28-30. The titles of my workshops are “Traditional vs. Self-publishing: Who Will Win?” and “What to Expect When You’re Self-Publishing.” Keep an out another SCBWI workshop announcement coming soon! You can see all my author appearances, including a local in-person one in May, on the Events page.

Finally, I had the pleasure of being a guest on the Woodbury Writes podcast, hosted by Sandy Carlson, poet laureate of Woodbury, CT. We had a great conversation about creating fantasies for young readers and more!

There’s more I could talk about, like how I’m so very close to being done with revisions of my YA psychological thriller Hamlet retelling. I’ll be doing a cover reveal and release date reveal for that soon…as soon as I finalize the title! But I’ve reached information overload.

What have you all been up to lately?

Signed Books, SELFIES FROM MARS Pre-order, & Self-Publishing Workshop

Since it’s that gift-giving time of year, a reminder that signed copies of my books are available to be shipped right to you on my Purchase Books page. If you want those goodies to arrive by Christmas, you should get your orders in now. And a reminder that you can also purchase them on all the usual online book retailers or order them from your local indie bookstore.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with my books, my award-winning YA fantasies, Elixir Bound and Elixir Saved, are great for teens or adults who love epic fantasy with cozy vibes. Pirate Island and Witch Test are contemporary middle grade with a hint of the supernatural, great for the 8 and up crowd but particularly perfect for 10-14 year-olds.

The Bedtime Knight is an imaginative, interactive picture book that’s a fun read aloud. And finally, Mommy’s Night Before Christmas is a modern take on the classic Christmas poem that is just as much for the adults as it is for the kids. This one is a great stocking stuffer for all the moms in your life.

Speaking of books (as if I talk about so many other things here!), I have a new one coming your way February 13, 2023, and it’s up for pre-order now. Meet Selfies From Mars: The True Story of Mars Rover Opportunity! It’s STEM with heart. This has been a passion project of mine that I’m so excited to bring to readers. It’s my first nonfiction children’s book, and I have loved working on it, particularly using all the amazing NASA images from Opportunity’s mission. I also navigated the tricky world of music licensing for this book.

At Indie Author Day at the Norwalk Public Library, there was a lot of interest from other authors to learn more about self-publishing children’s books. So I’ve been convinced to offer up my self-publishing workshop “What to Expect When Self-Publishing” in January. This is digital workshop, so you can attend from anywhere (details and sign up here)!

Yes, I’ve been very busy! I wouldn’t want it any other way. What have you all been up to this fall?

A Geriatric Millennial Joins TikTok

It’s been a weird start to the year where I can’t seem to get into any kind of rhythm. My husband had to travel for work in early January and there have been lots of interruptions to the kids’ school schedules, so it’s not surprising that I feel this way…it’s just annoying. These last two years have been so all over the place!

I did manage to join TikTok (find me here @katielcarrollauthor) , which I’ve been hearing can be an important marketing tool for authors. It’s too soon to say if it’s helping me actually sell any books, but I am having fun…even though I’m a “geriatric millennial” and therefore old in social media terms!

This super short one is my most viewed video:

These two longer ones don’t have a ton of views, but they are more personal regarding my journey as a writer, so I’m partial to them.

Anyone else on TikTok? Share your info in the comments and I’ll make sure to follow you.
