Celebrating New York Yankees Style

Last night (or maybe early this morning) the New York Yankees won their 27th World Series Title. Woohoo! If you know anything about me, you might know I’m a bit of a Yankees fan (that’s me a few years ago at the old Yankee Stadium).

How big of a Yankees fan am I? Well, this year I dressed as Derek Jeter, my favorite current player. I was boycotting having to dress slutty. (Since when did dressing up for Halloween for a woman over the age of 15 mean looking super slutty?) Halloween is about living out your dreams by pretending to be whatever it is you want to be. Well, I’m already sexy, so I don’t have to pretend to be that. And who wants to be slutty?

My Derek Jeter costumer really did fulfill one of my childhood dreams. When I was three, I used to tell everyone I was a boy (identity crisis…maybe?), but my reasoning was perfectly logical. I knew girls didn’t play for the New York Yankees. I wanted to play for the Yankees. Therefore, if I told everyone I was a boy, I would be allowed to play.

And it wasn’t just I wanted to play baseball. Nope, I wanted to play for just one team. I even went so far as to refuse to wear my red baseball cap. Red was Red Sox colors; no way were you gonna catch me in red. I was all about my little navy blue cap.

Some people might wonder why I’m so excited about a baseball team. What is so great about your team winning a championship anyway? The truth is, I’m not sure I really know. I suppose there’s the living-vicariously factor and the excitement of rooting for the best team in the world, but I think it comes back to making connections.

A sports game is a good excuse to get together with your friends (and eat crappy food without feeling too guilty about it) and getting a little rowdy. I love any environment where it’s perfectly acceptable to yell obscenities at the TV. Plus, when you watch or attend a game, there’s a certain camaraderie between all the people watching, even if they’re strangers. If you ask someone about where they were during a certain memorable game, they always have a story, and then you can share your story with them.

Last night I somehow ended up watching the game all by myself (the hubby a Red Sox fan…boo…so he went to bed). Just before the last out, my dad called from Florida (he and my mom are there on vacation). He asked, “You watching the game?” I replied, “What kind of fan do you think I am? Of course I’m watching the game.” I had taken my parents to the airport earlier in the week and my dad had mentioned that he told God that he didn’t care what happened with the NY Giants this year, all he wanted was for the Yankees to win the World Series.

I was really honored that my dad called me for the last out. I had turned the volume on my TV way down and had put the radio on to listen to the end of the game (something my dad does all the time). The TV was a good five seconds behind the radio, so I heard the call before I saw it. I was quick enough to hold the phone up to the radio so my dad could hear John Stirling (the Yankees radio announcer) yell his signature, “Ballgame over! The Yankees win! Theeeeeeee Yankees win!”

Then I heard my mom whooping in the background (she had had a whole three beers!) in celebration. It was the middle of a night on a Wednesday in November, but the Yankees winning the World Series made it a special night. And I got to share a few moments of it with my dad.

Sharing Fall In New England

As promised, I have some fall pictures to show. Oh, and I don’t think I knocked on wood hard enough because we’ve had some really cold fall weather…you can blame me for opening my big fat mouth about how nice the fall weather is in New England!

These are some early fall photos. It’s been a weird season so far. It seems there was still so much green and then there was also a lot of bare trees all at the same time. The last few days the color has really kicked into high gear, so I’ll try to get some more photos…that is if we don’t get too much rain (maybe I’ll try crossing my fingers this time instead of knocking on wood!).

A Tour Through the Largest Shopping Mall on the East Coast

I recently attended the Eastern PA SCBWI Fall Philly Conference. My hotel room was in King of Prussia, PA right next to largest shopping mall on the East Coast. This mall is so big that it has been separated into two different buildings, each of which is the size of a regular mall. The inside of the mall is gorgeous (way more posh and much cleaner than the mall near my house…sorry I forgot my camera, so there’s no pics), and I even saw a mall cop on a segway. No worries…he was wearing a helmet!

Now I’m not a big shopper, but I wanted to check out the bookstore, which was (of course) as far as it could possibly be from where I entered. I walked all the way through the first building (and I accidentally took the long way), into the second building, and all the way to the far end of the second building. Phew! I like to think I’m in pretty good shape, but I was tired after all that walking.

So on my long walk I passed by a Teavana, which is now where I get all my tea (Black Dragon Pearl tea not only has a really cool name, but it also tastes awesome). I texted my husband about seeing a Teavana (they only have two locations in CT…and none of them are that close to my house…boo). Then texted him about seeing a Pottery Barn because we just bought couches from there and the closest Pottery Barn to our house is about 30 minutes away. (Can you tell from all that texting that I was a bit lonely–maybe a little bored too–all by myself in that big mall?)

As I walked more and more, I jokingly texted the hubby that there were so many stores in the mall that there was probably at least one of every possible store. A little while later, I spotted the Teavana on the floor below me. I though Oh no! How did I walk around the whole mall and miss the one store I was looking for? Then I realized I was in a totally different building from the first Teavana, and this was a whole other Teavana. Wow! There really is at least one of everything in that mall!

I did finally find the Borders and bought a few books to be signed by authors I would be meeting at the conference the next day (more on that to come).

One last thing before I go…Mary Cole of Andrea Brown Literary Agency is hosting a query contest over at her Kidlit website. Good luck to those who enter!

The Simple Perfection of Autumn in New England

If winter in New England is long and harsh, summer in New England is short and hot, and spring in New England is cool and rainy, then fall in New England may just be the perfect season. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a summer baby and have no problem playing soccer in 90-degree heat, but fall has a certain magical quality about it here in CT.

I love the fresh crispness of the air contrasted with the earthy scent of decay, the crunch of leaves underfoot, the full moon clear in the sky, the spicy sweetness of apple cider, and the bite of a cool breeze on the tip of my nose and ears.

The temperature is pleasant (64 degrees today), the sun is usually shining (except for the October I got married when it poured for a full 13 days, leading right up to my wedding day…if rain on your wedding day is good luck, then I must have the best marriage luck in the world), and there’s plenty of fun fall activities.

I’ve already gone apple picking at Bishop’s Orchard, and I plan on making some great pies. Oh, and I got fresh apple-cider doughnuts, which were awesome. I have yet to pick—okay, not so much pick as in harvest, but pick as in select—pumpkins, but that’s definitely on the to-do list. There are also corn mazes, great hiking weather, and all the great fall foliage to check out. Of course, there are all the different haunted activities in the area as well.

Yep, fall is quite wonderful around here (knock on wood because I don’t want to jinx it!).

A Monster Mash-Up

Now that it’s almost October, I’ve decided it’s not too early to share this little bit of silly Halloween fun. Courtesy of the Oriental Trading Company (which is a good place to shop if you’re hosting a themed party), I made a Monster Mash-Up.

I created several of these with various people in my family and e-mailed the results to them. Admittedly, uploading and cropping those pictures to get the heads just right was way more fun than it should have been.

The one you got to see featured me, me, and more me (at various stages of my life). There’s me at a Yankees game, me sitting in a river with shorts on my head while on a girls’ camping trip, me in a swimming pool, me dressed up as a pirate for my Halloween party, and me sitting on a lawn with my sisters (we’re all in dresses). I picked the rock version of the song because, of course, I’m a rock star!

So often, it’s the little things in life that put a smile on my face. What makes you smile? (Oh, and if you decide to make your own Monster Mash-Up be sure to post a link for me…pretty please.)
